As cities grow denser and daily life becomes increasingly mobile, carrying goods through urban environments presents new challenges. Traditional shopping trolleys are practical but rarely designed for the modern urban lifestyle. They often lack flexibility, aesthetic appeal, and the adaptability needed by today’s city dwellers.
BOW, short for Bag On Wheels, was created to change this. BOW aims to help people move through cities freely, confidently, and in style. The ambition was to reinvent shopping mobility by creating a solution that combines convenience, durability, and personal expression.
We set out to design a new type of product: a modular mobility system that transforms the traditional shopping trolley into a contemporary lifestyle accessory for urban explorers.
At the start of the project, the focus was on defining a clear vision for the product and the role it should play in everyday urban life. Rather than improving an existing trolley design, the ambition was to rethink the category entirely.
The goal became to develop a modular system consisting of a durable frame and interchangeable bags. This would allow users to adapt their BOW to different situations and express their personal style through different bag designs.
Three key principles guided the project: effortless mobility, durable construction with replaceable components, and a distinctive design language that elevates the product beyond pure functionality.
To inform the development process, we explored how people transport goods in cities today and how current solutions perform in daily use.
Research showed that while wheeled shopping bags offer convenience, many users perceive them as outdated or purely utilitarian. For younger urban consumers in particular, products that combine function with aesthetics are increasingly important.
We also observed a growing demand for adaptable products. Consumers value solutions that can evolve with their needs through interchangeable components or replaceable parts. This insight reinforced the idea of creating a modular system that balances practicality with personal expression.
The insights gathered during research were translated into clear design criteria to guide the development process.
First, the product needed to support smooth and effortless mobility in busy urban environments. Stability, manoeuvrability, and ergonomic usability became key considerations.
Second, modularity was essential. The frame and bags needed to form a flexible system where components could easily be exchanged or replaced, extending the product’s lifespan and allowing users to tailor their BOW to their lifestyle.
Finally, the design needed to feel contemporary and expressive. Instead of hiding the product’s functionality, the design embraces it, creating a bold and recognizable identity.
During the development phase, we explored multiple iterations of frames, wheel configurations, and bag constructions to achieve the right balance between durability, usability, and visual character.
At the same time, we paid special attention to the interaction between the frame and the bag system. The connection needed to feel intuitive and secure, while still maintaining a clean and minimal design language.
Through continuous prototyping and testing, we gradually refined the design to improve manoeuvrability, ensure stability when carrying heavier loads, and optimize the overall user experience. As a result, the final concept combined practical functionality with a lightweight and cohesive appearance.
The final BOW product introduces a versatile solution for urban shopping mobility. The modular system combines a durable frame with interchangeable bags, allowing users to adapt the product to different occasions and personal preferences.
The result is a product that merges practicality with style. High-quality materials and replaceable components ensure longevity, while the customizable bag options allow users to create a setup that reflects their personal taste.
