CMF Sprint: colour, material and finish, decided in a day
What is the CMF Sprint?
A fixed-scope session for a product or portfolio question you have now: a new product, a range that needs a refresh, a portfolio that has drifted apart. After an intake call with Mandy we prepare a programme around your products, brand and objectives. The day itself is a working session with our CMF team, with trend insight, materials in the hand and decisions, in our studio in Geldermalsen, next to the materials library, or at your location in Europe. Five working days later you receive the Direction Pack.
It runs standalone for a refresh or a portfolio question, or as the CMF work package inside a development project, after the architecture is agreed.
When it fits
- A new product or product platform that needs its CMF language before design is locked
- A range or colour palette that is due a refresh
- A portfolio that needs one consistent language across products
- A new market segment where the brand has to read differently
- A move to recycled or bio-based materials, with the finish to match
- Product, design, brand and engineering that need to agree before the next phase
What we do on the day
Following the intake, MODYN prepares a programme around your products, brand and objectives. Together we:
- Read the CMF and consumer trends that matter for your category
- Define the product experience and brand identity the CMF has to carry
- Work with colours, materials and finishes from the library, in the hand
- Mark where recycled and bio-based materials and new finishes are realistic
- Develop three CMF directions
- Decide priorities and the next steps
Throughout, creativity is weighed against production, durability, cost and feasibility, the same test every MODYN design has to pass.
What you receive
Within five working days after the session, a digital CMF Direction Pack:
- A summary of the session and the decisions taken
- The relevant trend highlights
- Three direction boards with colour, material and finish proposals
- The agreed CMF principles and evaluation criteria
- Priorities and a roadmap for the next phase
The Direction Pack is yours. It sets the strategic and creative direction. Final colour specifications, supplier sourcing, material sampling and production-ready CMF documentation are not included unless agreed separately. They are the next phase, which we can run as a project or inside your team.
Your sprint lead: Mandy van der Heijden, Lead CMF Designer
Mandy van der Heijden leads CMF at MODYN. With over twelve years in product design, trend forecasting and CMF strategy, she works with international brands on products that have to be chosen on sight and feel right in the hand. She draws on global research, the leading design fairs and project work across bicycles, child transport, vehicles and consumer products, and runs the sprint so that a design team leaves with colour, material and finish decisions it is confident about.
Who should take part
Four to eight people, covering the disciplines that will have to live with the decision: product management, design, brand and marketing, engineering, sustainability and the business owner.
What to bring: the products or samples in question, your brand guidelines, the competitor products you measure yourself against, and any material or cost constraints that are already fixed.
Investment
A CMF Sprint starts from €5,000 excluding VAT. This includes the intake, preparation, a six-hour session including lunch at the MODYN studio in Geldermalsen or at your location in Europe, and the CMF Direction Pack. Additional research, materials, travel and further design development are quoted separately.
