Challenge

After a decade of incredible success, Thule wanted to update the iconic Thule Yepp so that its enduring appeal could continue to be a success for another ten years. Turning to MODYN, the team that designed the original Yepp, Thule trusted us to keep the same friendly and quirky character lines of the Yepp but provide a more universal appeal that could expand the car seats’ reach while also updating the seat to meet new safety standards.

Our approach
Digging

The Thule Yepp had huge appeal in Benelux and was sold all over the world. But doing some digging and market research, we found there was an opportunity to expand the bike seat’s appeal. We also found that there was an opportunity to improve the entire use cycle, from the packaging to its sustainability.

Defining

In a workshop with Thule, we decided what elements we wanted to bring over from the original design, like its comfort, colors and character, easy-to-clean surface and dedication to safety. We also defined what needed to be added, like new safety standards, an easy-fit mount, quick-release features and a new plastic frame that would have less of an environmental impact than the welded metal tubing from the original.

Designing

To keep with the original character lines that curved from the top to the bottom of the seat, we decided to add a flushed plastic arm rest as well as a ‘Y’ shaped exoskeleton that the EVA seat could be suspended inside. This not only added more protection and met new safety standards, but allowed the seat to bounce and absorb shock, adding more comfort. Using prototypes for the entire design process, we also designed different variations of the holes in the EVA for air flow to honor the heritage of the original design.

Developing

One of the biggest challenges in the development phase was fixing the EVA material to the new plastic frame. We worked intensively alongside the Thule team to develop the right solution, as well as continuously testing models to ensure the proportions on every detail of the seat were correct as well as the strength of the materials. During this phase we even acquired specialized software to make the new hole pattern for the EVA material.

Multiple 1:1 models were made during the developing phase:

The Yepp 2 child bike seat is a testament to MODDYN’s commitment to combining timeless design with modern functionality. Building on the heritage of the classic Yepp, we introduced a fresh design language that speaks to today’s urban lifestyle. With a soft, shock-absorbing foam seat and an updated color palette, the Yepp 2 ensures both comfort and style for young riders.

This design evolution not only maintains the essence of the original but also incorporates thoughtful enhancements such as adjustable footrests and footstraps to grow with your child. The robust universal rack mount system ensures quick and easy installation, while built-in reflectors and safety light attachment points enhance visibility on the road.

At the heart of our process lies rigorous testing at the Thule Test Center™ in Hillerstorp, Sweden, where we push our products to their limits. The Yepp 2 is available in frame, rack, and front versions, each equipped with childproof safety buckles, padded 5-point harnesses, and high-quality metal locks for maximum security and peace of mind.

The result? A child bike seat that marries iconic design with contemporary usability, made for the most important people in the world.
