Introduction

Founded in 1948, Viking is the world’s leading speed skate manufacturer, with over 60 years at the absolute top level of international competition. At the most recent Winter Olympics, 95% of all long track speed skating medals were won on Viking skates.

With climate change putting pressure on the winter sports market and reducing natural ice availability, Viking initiated a strategic expansion into summer sports. Cycling — a core training activity for speed skaters — became a natural next step.

Born from decades of dominance in elite speed skating, the Cobalt cycling shoe translates Viking’s racing DNA into pure summer performance.

Our approach

Engineered around an ultra-stiff and lightweight carbon tub sole (stiffness index 12), every watt of power is transferred instantly and directly to the bike. The thermo-fit carbon construction wraps the foot like a second skin, creating a locked-in feel built for speed. Combined with the precision of the Atop A-A70 closure system, the Cobalt prepares riders for decisive attacks, final sprints and personal bests.

Our challenge was to ensure the design fully reflected these impressive specifications. The lightweight performance had to be visible in the aesthetics. Sharp, defined leather lines emphasize the powerful carbon lower structure, while minimal stitching enhances the shoe’s aerodynamic character

The CMF strategy reinforces this performance narrative. A subtle blue interior, visible along the ankle edge, hints at the technical precision and power hidden within. The clean white upper contrasts strongly with the exposed carbon sole, making the stiffness and engineering visually explicit. Silver decals and the refined Atop dial add a final touch of precision — like functional jewellery — ensuring the Cobalt doesn’t just perform at the highest level, but unmistakably looks the part.

A shoe designed not just for riding — but for racing.
